First of all, we from KDU University College, would like to congratulate the Events Operations and MICE students from SHTCA (School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts)! Purpose? They have successfully raised RM 6092.85 from all their hard work, tears and sweat. The collected sum will be donated towards the orphans and and single mothers of Rumah Baitul Amal Kasih, Bukit Rahman Putra. Hampers and "Duit Raya" (Green packet) was also given  to home during a "Buka Puasa" dinner. Good job done by the CULA 4 students as well, taking charge of the food and Culinary service together with their lecturers.

To add icing on the cake, they were also treated to a shopping spree at Carrefour, Tropicana City Mall. Each of them were given RM 120 to buy Raya clothes and accessories. The remaining collection was divided equally among them as additional "Duit Raya".

We are extremely proud of the students effort! Not only did they do good and give back to the society, but also brought a whole new level of happiness during this Raya festive season. Definitely an event worth to remember!
Last but not least, a word or two from the accompanying lecturer of this project, Datin Puteri Juliana.
"My hats off to the students as they put in a tremendous effort in this project. Thank you to all who have contributed towards the project one way or the other. We as Malaysians, must embrace of what we have today and not forgetting a vital part in our history. We might forget the names of the warriors that fought for our country or even the story that lies behind, evolving our country to what it is today. This time around, to reignite the sentiment of the 55th Merdeka Day, the KDU’s School of Communication and Creative Arts took the initiative to organize an Infographics Exhibition!

So, who were the involving parties? The art exhibition was organized by 57 Diploma in Mass Communication students from the Desktop Publishing class of KDU’s School of Communication and Creative Arts, under the guidance of Ms.Pouline Koh (Communication and creative arts lecturer and exhibition curator). Students learned everything from scratch, and until today, we are very excited to share this with the public. I am very proud  of my students and this journey is a very memorable event for me. KDU UC’s Auditorium in its Damansara Jaya campus was turned into an amazing dance hall for some cool street dance and singing performances on 30th August 2012 from 7pm onwards.  Back 2 Street was the name of the event, organized by PARTS (KDU UC’s Performing Arts Club) and PR Club (KDU UC’s Public Relations Club).
Before the show started, audiences were treated to a sumptuous buffet of Indian dishes. Served on the buffet line was biryani rice and some authentic spicy chicken and meat dishes and vegetables. The audience relaxed and chilled in anticipation for the highlight of the night – the much awaited performances!

About 200 guests turned up for the event and showed their support at the ever-amazing event. Dance is a passion, where the young crowd find themselves involving in and enjoying watching it at the same time. Talented singers also performed during the night to keep things heating up.
Ahmad Riyal, the president of both clubs mentioned that the main objective of the event was to showcase the talents of KDU UC students.
The emcee of the event had full of enthusiasm and is friendly.  The night was full of cheering, shouting and applause from the audience.
The first performance that took centre stage was the Performing Art (PARTS) members performing Joker, Americano and tango dances. The audience was roaring with delight at their slick performance.
Next up was a K-Pop performance by male dancers. Their fluid dance moves captured the audience attention as they performed a jaw dropping performance.
Kelvin, a Taylor’s UC student performed a mesmerising hip hop act. Surely, he garnered a number of new fans from the audience as he certainly was a talented dancer!

A trio consisting of a back- up vocalist, lead vocalist Meghan and a guitarist took the stage with their rendition of Adele’s Rolling In The Deep. Wow, it was definitely a power house performance!
Qamarina sang “Love The Way You Lie” by Rihanna, accompanied by a rapper. The performance was definitely a hard act to follow as she sang her heart out to the crowd.
The last singing performance was by Anusha, singing “Do It like a Dude” sung by Jessie J. She was electrifying on stage!
The night then followed by a contemporary dance by PARTS members that had the audience enthralled.
Then came along with a hot burlesque dance performance by the girl members of PARTS.
Ahmad Riyal then introduced BeatNation to the crowd, a beatboxing trio who had just won gold and silver at a beatboxing competition in Singapore. The group was so enthusiastic and ecstatic.
The final act was a hip hop dance to the song “You Make Me Feel” by Cobra Starship. It was an energetic performance that blew the crowd away.
Great job to PARTS and PR Club for putting up an awesome show! Back 2 Street was definitely an event to remember. KDU UC does live up to its promise of producing students not only with good results academically but also talented and versatile students. Bravo!

Most of us are not aware of the threats that are lurking in our computers. Well, of course most of the IT or tech-savvy group will be known to it. This time around, the KDU School of Computing and Creative Media organized a workshop called "Are you Under Attack?" on 11th September 2012 at KDU University College, Damansara Jaya campus. So, what went down?

"Cyber bullying shows us cases that could lead to death. We must always be careful and take extra precaution on the type of information we are giving out or posting, especially posts like location. The magnitude of cyber crime could be up to 1million victims of fraud per day. We need to play our part to curb cyber crime as this could protect our lives as well as our families, or loved ones. 92.6% of cyber bullying happens on the Facebook platform and it can come in various forms," explained Philip.

An interview with KDU student, Jonathan Lim!

So, what has Jonathan Lim achieved so far during his internship period? He is now interning in the kitchen department at Hotel President Wilson (Starwood's Luxury Collection), Geneva Switzerland. We had the chance to have an interview with him and this will be a very interesting read especially to students who will be interested in the culinary field and have a passion for food as well as realizing this dream into a possible career.
Let's take Jonathan Lim as a great example to KDU as he shares his experience in Geneva, Switzerland and how he copes in his work as well as taking the opportunity to participate in competitions. He was a student of KDU University College from March 2010 to May 2011 studying Diploma in Culinary Arts (Batch CULA 10) and later on continued on to Higher Diploma in European Culinary Management from June 2011 to December 2011.

This would be Jonathan. Say hello to Jonathan, a very decent and friendly young lad :)

Tell us more about the ZAGG exhibition for restaurants and hoteliers
The ZAGG in Lucerne, the Swiss Exhibition for Hospitality, Hotel and catering, has established itself as an important and successful platform for the industry. Since the beginning it was able to grow steadily over the years and inspire even more visitors. The fair is not only meeting place for the central Swiss industry, but has a Swiss wide broadcasting. The exhibition offers high-quality attractive side events and special shows as well as a world-class cuisine which are the undisputed advantages of Zagg. It is held once every 2 years. At the same time it has remained manageable, and also the personal exhibition platform where exhibitors of various brands in hospitality and food and visitors feel comfortable and can meet in a pleasant atmosphere. The side events included European Culinary Challenge ( the search for the Swiss National Culinary Team for the Culinary World Cup), Swiss Skills ( Different attendees from different hospitality and catering businesses such as hotels and restaurants attended to compete in both service skills and culinary skills. It was held from 9th to 12th of September in Lucerne.

The Award (What did you presented/cook?)
The award presented was Bronze in 'Culinary Arts' or 'Kochkunst' in German. It was one of the side events in the exhibition. The grading system is based on a contestant's merit in cooking. Students from my batch of BA in European Culinary Management (IMI) were prompted to join. Due to students having their internships overseas and other places in Switzerland, one by one slowly couldn't make it therefore I was the only one left to join the competition. The competition I joined was Cold Food Presentation. This type of competition showcases the skills of a chef but the food is not tasted. It is only for the eyes to see therefore presentation is the key factor. The food created are covered in aspic ( cover in a couple layers of gelatin to preserve during the exhibition and to give it a glossy look). It was not easy as there were almost 2 months of test cooks carried out. I had to return to IMI in Lucerne, from Geneva during my 2 days off from working (3 hours journey 1 way) every week. It was tiring as practically I did not have rest on my days off but continue to be in the universities' kitchen to try out different things.
I had to present a 3 course meal. The menu was :

Appetiser - Prawn in spiral, Tomato sheet with mozzarella cream, Pesto and Lobster consomme with vegetables
Main Course - Sous-vide and Roasted Pork belly, Medley of Vegetables, Potato mille-feuille with Courgette mousse and Pork Jus
Dessert - White chocolate mousse with dark chocolate truffle, Watermelon carpaccio, berry salad and macaroon
Jonathan with his winning picture, accompanied with his winning smile :)

Current work place
I am currently doing my internship in the kitchen department at Hotel President Wilson ( Starwood's Luxury Collection). I did a couple of months in Arasbesque, Lebanese fine dining restaurant in HPW and now I am currently in the Glow bar/Room Service kitchen. When I was at Arasbesque, I learnt a lot of Lebanese cuisine at its finest. I did mise-en-place at first and I was a line cook after 3-4 weeks working inside. I had the chance to cook during lunch and dinner service for the guests. It was two different kinds of responsibilities but it had taught me a lot. It is also French speaking so I could also learn and practice my French when I am working now.

Life in Switzerland
The Swiss experience is really wonderful. Being able to further my Degree in European Culinary Management is a priceless experience. Studying at IMI was awesome as I made many friends through different nationality as it was an international university. During my studies, many events went on and I would say it is quite happening in IMI. There were events from the Events students. We had concept dinners too from the chef students. Sport days were held here too and all the students enjoyed themselves throughout the studies It is situated at Kastanienbaum, which holds one of the most beautiful views I have ever seen. I am now doing my intern in Geneva. It is also magnificent here as it is the international city of the world. The HQ of United Nations is situated here. The lake and the oldtown is just beautiful. There are so many activities one could do in Switzerland, such as cycling, hiking, skiing, and the list is endless.

The breathtaking landscape of Geneva, Switzerland

Future Plans
My future plans would be to work overseas to gain experience. I have thought of an internal transfer under the Starwood group or applying to various top restaurants in New York or Chicago. The thing about hoteliers and catering jobs are there for us in every country. My hobby is photography so I might stay back in Malaysia, Ipoh specifically to do an apprenticeship with professional photographers and might be doing a professional course in photography if my mum permits.

Life in KDU
My life in KDU was awesome. I did the course which my passion was. Made a lot of new friends through different races and from different places. I am from Ipoh, Perak so it was exciting to be in Selangor/Kuala Lumpur to be studying. Different lecturers have taught me many things and through their experiences I have learnt a lot. What made the difference was the chef lecturers at KDU. They gave us insights of the hospitality world, what it would be like and what to expect. KDU offered a lot of activities and events too so it was enjoyable.

The beautiful landscape of Kastanienbaum, Lucerne

Who was your inspiration?
My inspiration came from my family. Mostly from my mother and my late aunty. They were really great cooks for the family. Though it was simple yet the flavours are robust. My late aunty was really good at baking. She had 'secret' recipes for all her cakes and she would do it for the family on special occasions. Everybody loved it. During my higher secondary school years (Form 4 and 5), the televisions shows that I only watch was all about food. Food Network, Asian Food Channel, Discovery Travel. Different chefs from different shows have made me quite inspired and those who have taught me in KDU really mattered.

Passion on cooking
My passion grew when I started watching more and more cooking and travel shows. My mum would let me cook dinner and then I experimented more dishes at home for my mum and me to try. My mum or family was doubting that I should go to Culinary school as the kitchen was always for those who were not able to do well in their studies (as an old fashion way of thinking). I scored straight A's in SPM and I manage to grab hold of The Star Publications Education Fund scholarship. It lightened my mum as the course was not that cheap. As I went on through cooking classes, I grew more as I learn more things day by day in the kitchen. Despite being painful or boring as time passes in the kitchen, I found it enjoyable and as the lessons are more hands-on. From there I decided I should have a Degree in Culinary Management and my mum allowed me to do it in IMI, Switzerland.

Advice to students
My advice students would be to know what your passion is. Everyone has their own passions and dreams. Follow that dream, make the passion into a career. To have an enjoyable career, one must be passionate about it. Money comes second. No matter how high the salary is and if one does not enjoy his career, he will be just wasting his life when he could do something that he loves. Money will come naturally when you enjoy your work. Don't stress and make indecisive decisions. Doing something that you like (hobby) does not mean that you will like it to be your career. Take time and think carefully what you want to work as for your future so you will have no regrets.

We are very proud of our newly graduated students; we wish you all the best in your next step in life, may you would always practice what we had taught you in the years you have spent walking along our corridors, learning in our classrooms and evolve as better individuals in our buildings.
Last but not least, CONGRATULATIONS to all KDU graduates! May all of you succeed in your future undertakings :)

A total of 33 individuals comprising both lecturers and students from various countries went bald for cancer in aid of the Home of Hope at the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM). The fundraising campaign was carried out by students enrolled in the Corporate Social Responsibility module at the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (SHTCA) at KDU University College, Damansara Jaya campus on 10th October 2012.

The campaign was organized in conjunction with September being Childhood Cancer Awareness month in the United States and Canada.  The student organisers wanted to create awareness on childhood cancer as September is not nationally recognised as Childhood Cancer Awareness month in Malaysia. The campaign saw all 33 volunteers setting their individual fundraising targets and actively sourcing for funds from their families, friends and colleagues. The month long campaign culminated in all 33 volunteers shaving bald in order to benefit a Malaysian charity.  As a result of their collective efforts the volunteers were able to raise a total of RM41,287 for children with cancer staying at the Home of Hope at NCSM.

Chef Raymond in action! He raised more than his initial target, RM 10,000.

One of the volunteers Chef Raymond Tham not only went bald but went the extra mile by preparing his favorite tiramisu as a token of appreciation for those who donated to help him reach his personal target of RM10,000. According to Chef Raymond, “I’m neither a scientist nor a surgeon, I’m a pastry chef. As such through my effort and peoples generosity, it is hoped that we can fill the world with love and help to sweeten the lives of children who have to deal with the horrors of cancer.

The 6 students from the Diploma in Culinary Arts; Jordan Ng, Jason Wooi, Yuen Chang Chong, Tan Kar-Munn, Lim Guang Rong and Matthew Chua who collectively raised RM9,472 against their set target of RM10,000 said that We did it in memory of Matthews grandfather who passed away due to cancer and for Kar-Munns dad who survived through 3rd stage nose and throat cancer and is now living a healthy life...its also for all the children who are right now battling cancer!

According to Ms. Kitty Lee(in the midddle), Head of SHTCA, “this is a good opportunity for people to learn more about cancer and understand the trials that children as well as their caregivers have to undergo through their loved ones cancer journey. At the same time, it gives courage to the children afflicted with cancer to carry on their lives and that they have people rooting for them to carry on.”

NCSM President, Dr Saunthari Somasundaram commended the efforts of KDU UC students and staff to help promote awareness on childhood cancer. Shebelieves thatthiseffortshould be madean example ofandcontinued byother universities inMalaysia. Dr Gogilawani Muagan, the Education and Development Manager at National Cancer Society Malaysia who attended the Mass Shaving of all the 33 volunteers was deeply touched with the students efforts and mentioned that this was the highest cash donations that NCSM has received thus far for the Home of Hope.

It was truly an emotional moment when the volunteers went through the experience of losing their crowning glory while the audience cheered to provide moral support throughout the mass shaving of heads. As each volunteer went under the razor, it was apparent that there was a strong bond and fellowship amongst the volunteers in their bid to help children with cancer.  The event ended with Dr. Wani, who represented NCSM at the event, receiving a mock cheque for the amount of RM 41,287.  Sponsors for the campaign include Chezz Hair Academy, Estee Lauder, Global Repro Printers, Mano’s Depiction Photography and Thiaga 90 Studio among others.

Be Hip! Go Bald for Cancer! is organised by the students of the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts, who are currently enrolled in KDU UC Bachelor in Hospitality Management (Corporate Communication) and Bachelor in Culinary Management (Culinary Operations/Baking & Pastry) degree programmes.  The students are required to undertake a project that will contribute to their overall assessment for the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) module, as partial fulfilment of the course requirements.

The CIMB Green Kitchen Challenge happened last Saturday saw 10 secondary school finalists  taking centre stage in a cooking competition. The CIMB EcoSave Green Kitchen Challenge, a corporate social responsibility initiative was organized by CIMB Islamic with the support of Pusat Sumber Alam Sekitar and KDU University College. The event was held in KDU University College, Damansara Jaya campus on  20th  October 2012. The intention of this challenge were to educate students on simple ways and methods to minimize solid waste and promote long-term sustainable benefits to the environment.
Each school team had a mentor to supervise and guide them.

The competition was divided into two stages. The first stage was conducted in July 2012 when students learnt how to produce compost out of food waste from their school canteens and use it to plant vegetables in their school gardens or plots.

The second stage of the challenge was the cook-off in which out of the 41 secondary schools in the Klang Valley that participated, 10 finalists moved on to this stage. These 10 finalists were given a chance to demonstrate their culinary skills and show their enthusiasm in cooking. With the ingredients produced in the first stage from their eco-friendly school gardens, these students were to cook a starter and main course for the judges.
This Green Kitchen Challenge was a fun filled event where the students had fun in exhibiting their potential in cooking and presentation. These students did not only impress the judges but also the teachers that were present. A job well done to the all the students who participated in this event!

Help-Portait by ALSA (Asian Law Student Association)

On the 29th of September 2012, the students of Asian Law Student Association (ALSA) KDU University College organised a project called the "Help-Portrait". Based on the United States, it is a movement by photographers who use their time, equipment and expertise to give back to those who are less fortunate. In order to show support for the movement, ALSA KDU set up a photography station to give the less fortunate families the ability to get high quality professional photos done of their families and walk out with a print photos for free.
ALSA KDU managed to support this good cause by setting up this small project of ours not to mention this was our very first project upon registering ourselves under the ALSA Malaysia which is a collaboration of many universities throughout Malaysia. As our mission, we volunteered ourselves to help the people (refugees seeking asylum in Malaysia) of the Hilla Community Centre, in Ampang . The aim was to promote the values of sharing and caring among the law students as well as letting others know the importance of peace. This project also allowed them to create awareness of the existence of the minority group in Malaysia among other Malaysians. This project also provided a chance for refugees to take family portrait with their children in order for them to preserve the happy moments of their children in their youth days as well as providing the needs for the children.
ALSA KDU helped and volunteered by raising funds in KDU University College campus as well as getting sponsorships from Canon for  the Help-Portrait. There are some private companies who were willing enough to support in this very first encounter and not forgetting to mention, Debbie Goh, for sponsoring 50 kilograms of rice. With the funds collected, they managed to get essential food supplies and were distributed among the families who attended the function. The happiness in their faces (refugees) was indescribable while they received the food supplies.
The centre started off with English learning and teaching. Learning the language was a vital matter for the refugees as most of them spoke in their mother tongue.  As more volunteers came forward to provide their services in teaching, the centre progressed and  was able to offer education for more subjects. Today, the classes conducted includes Bahasa Malaysia, Mathematics, Science, Arts and Craft, Piano, Vocal and Computers. Educational trips are organized to enhance the students learning experience. The centre also has an adjacent piece of land within its compound. Physical education classes are conducted here. It also serves as both a playground and activities centre for the students. In 2009, the Malaysian Ministry of Education announced that refugees are allowed to sit for the local government examinations.
The centre has also embarked on the initiative to provide job training and counselling for adult refugees. Adults and older students are taught working skills. The subjects includes computer skills and hairdressing.
Few of the Afghanistan refugees said that the reason their fled to Malaysia is because of the war and violence that are currently happening in their country. One of the refugee stated that because of the war, most of his family were killed so now the only family members he has is his wife and children. To add on, a single mother for two who has been living in Malaysia for the past 3 years wanted to start a fresh life, running away from her abusive ex-husband who has threaten to kill them.
Life has and will always be difficult and unfair for them because of their background. However, in all hopes that the society or government may provide aid to them in order for them to have a new start of life in Malaysia. Last but not the least, ALSA KDU would love to thanked those who were involved in this project either directly or indirectly for helping them to achieve success in their very first mission after newly setting their base in KDU. As a quote to end, “love all, serve all” and “help ever, hurt never”. If both of these quotes are practised, surely there will be a change in the society.
