PETALING JAYA, Saturday, 09th of November 2013
– KDU University College has come a long way in its 30 year history from a single dedicated campus in Damansara Jaya. Amongst its most recent and notable achievements was the change in status from KDU College to KDU University College. In light with this milestone achievement, KDU’s Alumni Association also evolved, rebranded and just held its first event under its new identity: KDU University College’s Alumni CORE.

Ms. Claudine Sherry Robson, President of the
Alumni Core addresses her fellow alumnus
before the movie begins
The rebranding of the Association was kicked off with exclusive movie premier event, only open to alumni of KDU College and KDU University College. “One of the problems is the sheer number of alumni we have,” explained Alumni President Claudine Sherry Robson, “So many of our alumni are either international students or Malaysians with a career that has taken them abroad. Of our 45,000 alumni, we believe that only 10,000 or so are still based locally in Malaysia.”

The event was somewhat smaller scale than anticipated with over 150 alumni attending the movie premier and rebranding of the Alumni association. Indeed, the feedback from the alumni was very positive, and it was not just the movie which they found to be a good mix of action and comedy. There was also extensive praise for the buffet selection which turned in to one of the event’s unexpected highlights.

Mr. Tan Chin Ike, Head of the School of Computing
and Creative Media, bids welcome to the
gathered alumni before the movie itself
Most of the alumni had plenty of praise for the rebranding of KDU UC’s Alumni Association. Graduate from the class of 2012, Hariz bin Mohamad Farzeen Lee had only this to say, “It was my first KDU UC alumni gathering and I believe there is more to come. I hope to attend more of these kinds of events in the future and be in touch with the rest of the alumni and the KDU UC family.”

On 29th November 2013, KDU University College’s Christian Fellowship club put together a night of thanksgiving and early Christmas celebration night for 116 students as well as visitors to KDU. The club’s main purpose was to bring people together for a night of fellowship and to learn the true meaning of true Christmas. The KDU square, had been redecorated to look like a different venue. Red, green and white cloths were draped all around the square to give the night a Christmas feel.

Four talented contestants took the stage one by one and each gave a unique performance with their own reasons behind their choice of song for the theme of thanksgiving. Pastor Hock, the invited guest of the night shared with everyone the true meaning of Christmas. Followed by that was an amazing performance by the featured band of the night: Relevance. With the tabulation of three judges’ scores, the first place winner was Dhimyan Siraj.

Ice breaker

His rendition of Feeling Good on guitar was undeniably great as it won him the first place prize of RM200. Coming in second place was Timothy James Mah who played his ukulele and gave the audience a calm feeling during his performance. His song dedication to his parents was also very touching and relatable for the audience. He won RM100 prize money. KDU-OBU law student wins prestigious essay writing prize

Whilst most of the students would find studying law challenging, one KDU-OBU student managed to balance her study life and participated in the ASIAN Law Student Association (“ALSA”) International Law Review Competition.

Liew Juan Juan, who is currently studying in the KDU-Oxford Brookes University 2+1 Twinning Programme, has won the first prize for an essay-writing competition titled “Human Rights and Time Advancement.” When asked about how she felt on winning the first prize at an international level competition, she modestly said: “I did not know that I won. I only found out when a friend of mine tagged me on Facebook.”

Her initial reaction was that she could not believe it to be true as she had very little expectation, let alone winning the first prize. “I entered the competition thinking it was for the National rounds, but I was surprised when I found out that I also beat other countries in Asia to win the ALSA International competition.” She only hope that the former Chief Justice of Malaya, Tan Sri Dato Zaki bin Tun Azmi, would read her submission. Nonetheless, she was equally delighted having H.E. José Ramos Horta, the former president of East Timor, a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and an expert in human rights examine and award her piece of work as the winner.

About her essay, she explained: “I tried to approach the topic at a different angle. I did not focus only on the law and the cases. I described the human rights law in the United Kingdom, the outcries of justice by child brides, and the discrimination faced by the whistle-blower, Mr Snowden. My interest in human rights leans more to the protection of children and women rights, and I am very grateful that Sir Ramos-Horta appreciated my chance to express my feelings on human rights. The winning of this competition further encourages me to explore the extensive area of human rights, and I only hope to be able to give back to society one day with my knowledge.”

It was not easy for her to pen down all the information due to human rights being so vast in topic. It took her two weeks to complete the essay due to the complexity of the theme and the limitation of words.  In addition to that, the thoughts of giving up never occurred to her as “human rights is one of the topics I am passionate about. I am especially concerned with the rights of women and children, which are usually the first victims to be subjected to unfairness and prejudice.”

Liew Juan Juan is truly grateful that she has a group of very dedicated lecturers at KDU to support her passion in studying as well as in her extra co-curriculum activities. “I would like to thank all my lecturers at KDU, but I would like to especially thank Ms. Cheah Wei Joo, Mr. Rajesvaran Nagarajan, and Mr. Abdul Rashid Ismail for sparking my interest in learning law and human rights. I do enjoy learning with these wonderful people.”

About the ALSA, she is currently the President of the KDU-ALSA. She is very active in her role by organizing a few events for the KDU-ALSA. She has managed a field trip for the KDU-ALSA members to attend the ALSA National Conference 2013 at UITM Shah Alam and also organized a charity project in gathering of funds, recyclable items, and donated items to give to Pusat Jagaan Anbe Sivam in Klang. Liew Juan Juan lauds the support she received from the KDU Law Department and also the Student Alumni Centre (SAC).

Liew Juan Juan has set personal goals for herself. “In the future, I hope to become an advocate who specializes in the area of Human Rights.” She also hopes that her winning will encourage more students to take part in ALSA activity and competition.

KDU law student experiences once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in the Selangor ADUN Muda Program

(First row standing: Ariane Nisha is seen standing on the far right)

In the National Graduate Employability Blueprint 2012-2017 published by the Ministry of Higher Education, it was found that 55.8% of fresh graduates have issues with poor command of English, 37.4% have character, attitude and personality incompetency, while 25.9% have demonstrated lack of problem solving abilities.

In order to averse herself from this affliction, Ariane Nisha a/p Rabindran, who is currently in her first year of the KDU-Oxford Brookes University 2+1 Twinning Programme, realized that it was imperative for her to have the correct employability attributes in order to compete with the other aspiring law graduates of the future. She decided to participate in the Selangor ADUN Muda Program, organized by the Selangor State Government with the aim of refining her characteristics, develop her skills and enhance her career prospects. Ariane was indeed surprised on being chosen as one of the 30 participants from the 265 overall applications submitted.

Speaker DUN Hannah Yeoh Tseow Suan, in her interview with Bernama, said that “this Program was a State government initiative to educate the youth regarding the role and responsibilities of the Selangor State Assembly apart from exposing them to politics at an early stage.”

“Through this Program, the participants would be able to play a role as a real State assembly member and have the chance to direct questions to the State government regarding the policies in creating laws. Apart from that, the participants would also be able to propose a law which could directly have an impact on the youth of today.”

Ariane considered the Program a success although it was the first of its kind in Selangor. “I gained a lot of knowledge about how laws are created in my own State, how the State Assembly operates and what motions get passed. As a law student, it makes me feel more motivated to learn about Malaysian law and create awareness on what is going on in Malaysia politically.”

The Program was held from 16 – 18 December 2013 at the Bangunan Annex, Dewan Negeri Selangor, Shah Alam which was chaired by YB Hannah Yeoh and YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad as the Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively. Ariane said that “it was an eye opening experience to have the State Assemblies themselves participating in the ADUN Muda event. The students are presented with the chance to speak to them on the day-to-day issues that are occurring and at the same time hear their personal thoughts on it.”

“Having the Speakers participating in the Program made it very clear to the participants on how a State Assembly member works first hand rather than hearing about it from external sources such as through the mainstream media.  In the future, hopefully more students will participate so we can debate with the actual assemblymen. During our debate, we had three real assemblymen observing us debating and they even raised further issues which made the experience more authentic.”

On her experience, Ariane explained that, “after we had decided on the two motions to be debated in groups, we had to do our own research on the motion as we had to anticipate what either the members of the Government, be it the Opposition or the Independent parties would counter-argue. We only had one night to prepare given the fact that we had to debate the very next day. We had to learn how to debate a motion as how it would actually be done in the State Assembly as members of the Assembly. We learnt the rules and procedure to accomplish it effectively similar to how it would actually be done in reality; thus a lot of research is required to make the debate go well.”

Overall, Ariane felt that “the organizers were very helpful to the participants and they made us feel very welcomed. The state assemblies also treated us very well as fellow equals and gave us a very interesting outlook on how politics work in reality when we sat with them during lunch and engaged them with questions.”

Premised on the concept of E3-boosters propounded by Prof. Khong Yoon Loon, Vice Chancellor of KDU University College, Ariane has personified the three set of skills that is vital to succeed in the real world namely English, EQ and Entrepreneurship. Ariane believes that through this exclusive Program, she has learnt new approaches to problem-solving and has gained a better understanding of the real world, culturally and academically apart from forming new friendships and strengthening her skill sets. She strongly hopes that the State Government and the higher education institutions would create more programs like this in the future to positively impact the present day youth.

KDU Law Department puts forward a stellar finishing touch to the end of 2013

2013 is a year of significant anniversaries. It is the 150th anniversary of the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC), and the 10th anniversary of the ICRC’s annual national International Humanitarian Law (IHL) moot court competition. For the team representing KDU’s law department, 2013 also welcomes the 30th anniversary of our beloved institution. It is therefore befitting that this year ends on a high note.

In the ICRC’s 10th annual national International Humanitarian Law (IHL) moot court competition co-organized with the University of Malaya, conducted recently on 30th November and 1st December 2013, KDU’s law prosecution team has secured the ultimate prize: National Champions! To top off this accolade, New Su-Ann, senior counsel of KDU’s prosecution team, has bagged the much-coveted “Best Mooter” award in the national competition.

The annual IHL moot court competition is a highly prestigious competition focusing on International Humanitarian Law practice and procedure, which essentially is the law of war. Throughout the course of history and civilization, the law of war was extended to consider not just the rights and duties of armies, but also the protection of, and alleviation of suffering for, all victims of war. The subject of international humanitarian law is comprised of those customary and treaty laws that address the plight of victims of war. For the oralists in this competition, a fictional international or non-international armed conflict scenario is presented to them, and it is their job as counsel to either prosecute or defend a person or group of persons accused of breaching laws in this given scenario.

Hence, it is a very exciting mock enactment of an International Criminal Court (ICC) courtroom case, drawing close allusions to real-life war cases such as the conflicts prosecuting Thomas Lubanga in the Democractic Republic of Congo hostilities; Omar al Bashir in the Darfur, Sudan conflict; and, amongst others, the crime of Ramiz Delalic, which many believed triggered the 1990s Bosnian War.

Genovasi and Innovation: Thinking outside the box

Mr. Shariff explains how Empathy with a problem helps create unique and effective solutions.

KDU University College had the unique opportunity of hosting Genovasi on the 7th of January 2014, where the Program Director, Mahadzir Shariff gave a one hour talk on “Industry Driven Innovation.” The talk focused on developing critical thinking skills and problem solving.

Mr. Shariff explains just what the RSA Design Challenge is about to the students of KDU UC

However, it was more than just critical thinking skills. Genovasi’s approach is about understanding the problem by experiencing or empathizing with those who suffer the problem by experiencing it before developing a possible solution. The solution itself will most likely go through multiple prototypes and this is the key stage to the success of the solution which may or may not be the result of “outside-the-box” thinking.

While short, the talk provided the students with a unique approach to problem solving, one that was appreciated by a number of the students. “It is an interesting approach to solving real world problems,” remarked Student Council President Chiew Wai Jin, currently studying for his Degree in Computing.

Mass Communications degree student Renushara Maduran, was also in agreement, “We’d be lucky to be able to actually apply this problem somehow.” Genovasi actually planned to give the students this opportunity. As a part of the talk given by Mr. Shariff, the details for the upcoming RSA Genovasi Malaysia Award were also presented to the students of KDU University College.

Mr. Shariff receiving a small token of thanks from KDU UC, presented by Ms. Yap Poh Mei from the Global Career Placement Services Unit, under the Student & Alumni Centre.

The RSA Genovasi Malaysia Award is a design project competition that challenges students to demonstrate their resourcefulness, creativity and innovation. The competition promotes students to develop solutions to real world problems using a multidisciplinary collaborative approach. There are three topics for the 2013/2014 launch of the RSA Genovasi Malaysia Awards, all of which will focus on pressing social, economic and environmental issues.

KDU UNIVERSITY COLLEGE HOST ROUNDTABLE ON GRADUATE EMPLOYABILITY

$

Did you know that many fresh graduates from local institutions of higher learning do not meet the basic standards set by employers?

Based on a study published by the Ministry of Education, employers have reported that graduates lack several key characteristics they seek. These include a strong command of English, the right attitude and the ability to solve problems. As a result, they are passed on from being hired.

In light of the situation, KDU University College organised an industry-education institution roundtable discussion to help shed some light on this gap, and what can be done to bridge it.

To provide its views from a higher education institution standpoint, KDU University College was represented by its Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Khong Yoon Loong.

Representing the voice of the industry were Malaysian American Electronics Industry (MAEI) chairman and American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce governor Dato’ Wong Siew Hai, Accor Malaysia and Pullman Kuala Lumpur Human Resources director Jennifer Lim and JobStreet.com’s senior marketing manager Debby Ho.

Education Ministry (Planning and Research Division) senior principal assistant secretary Dr Guan Eng Chan was on the panel to convey the Malaysian government’s stand on the issue.

The roundtable was moderated by Malaysian Qualifications Agency chief executive officer Dato' Dr. Syed Ahmad Hussein, who is also the ASEAN Quality Assurance Network president, and Association of Quality Assurance Agencies of the Islamic World’s first president.

Dato’ Wong Siew Hai highlighted some of the problems that might affect the quality of graduates. “The main problem is the command of English,” he said. He added that many fresh graduates also lacked the ability to express themselves and explain things.

“When you ask them to say something about themselves, they struggle,” he said.

Dr Guan concurred, saying that knowing languages was an important factor. “It is not just English. If you are multi lingual, you stand a better chance to gain employment,” he said.

KDU University College has recently launched an initiative called the E3-Boosters, whereby a set of skills specifically targeted to remedy the common shortcomings faced by fresh graduates seeking employment will be imparted to its students.

The E3-Boosters, comprising English Proficiency, EQ Development and Entrepreneurship, are incorporated into the curricula of its academic programmes and its students are heavily exposed to them.

KDU University College vice-chancellor Dr Khong Yoon Loong said that the institution will ensure that its graduates receive the necessary skills required to address the common shortcomings.

Dr Khong added that the university would provide opportunities for all students to learn these skills while pursuing their various courses. Students also needed to meet older people with different management styles, tactics and personalities for only then could they work and adapt to different situations.

He stressed to the students that they should get involved in co-curricular activities. “Get involved as much as you can on campus. Don’t spend all your time just reading books,” he said.

All the panelists agreed that experiential learning was important and encouraged students to find work- paid or voluntarily- during their holidays.

Petaling Jaya - The School of Communication and Creative Arts, KDU University College invited multiple award winning film director Anthony Chen (of Ilo Ilo fame) for a dialogue with Richard Chua, the programme leader for diploma in entertainment arts recently at its campus.

Over the last two years, the School of Communication and Creative Arts has invited various well-known celebrities from Asia to its campus, from Ko Chi Sum (Hong Kong) to Irene Ang (Singapore). With its focus on getting the entertainment arts students acquainted with important existing media players, as well as promising young talents in the world, the presence of Anthony Chen, the winner of 26 prestigious international film awards including four highly coveted awards from the 50th Golden Horse Film Awards for his feature film debut “Ilo Ilo” was perfectly timed.

"Our entertainment arts programme aims to not only train prospective creative talents in Malaysia but also establish networks with important entertainment arts directors, such as Anthony Chen to allow students direct insight into the entertainment industry," said Associate Professor Dr Hon Wei Min, Deputy Vice Chancellor, KDU University College. "Overall, the Asian media industry is experiencing new and exciting times."

Through this event, KDU University College aims to equip students with an international outlook when it comes to career advancements after their education with the university. KDU University College believes that students should be given the opportunity and privilege to broaden their horizons and strive for excellence. Students are given an in-depth understanding of the filming industry and the expectations required to be successful in this industry.

Advising students on the values and elements that a good film director should possess, Anthony Chen said, “The first aspect is maturity where age does not matter, but how you perceive the world and its environment is essential as well as having a sense of understanding towards humanity. Good taste is another component involved as you need to have an artistic mind to produce creative ideas in making films. There is also a need for sensibility which can be developed through nurtured experience.”

“There are many challenges and setbacks along the way in the film industry especially for film makers like me but if you have the passion and desire to strive for your dreams, you will definitely succeed. It also takes sheer determination and persistence to overcome these challenges and having the will not to give up even at your lowest point. When you go through this phase in your career, you will definitely gain more experience and wisdom,” added Anthony.

Besides gaining positive learning outcomes, this event and more like it are expected to lead students on to further discussions on the pathway towards international film-making and creating a platform for students to venture into the film industry with exposure to the workings and challenges they will face when they enter the industry.

With the introduction of E3Boosters into the students’ curricula, KDU University College has focused its vision to instill important values into its students. There are three elements involved in boosting the demand and comprehensiveness of students which represents English Proficiency, Emotional Quotient and Entrepreneurship.

This is because a long time ago, Chap Goh Mei was the only day that young maidens were allowed to dress up and stroll on the street, albeit having to be accompanied by fierce chaperones. Young men would then go out, hoping to catch a sight of the rarely seen maidens. Young women also went to temples to pray, hoping for the heavens to send them a suitable match. Matchmakers took the opportunity to strike up marriages between eligible individuals.

This year, Chap Goh Mei coincides with Valentine’s Day which falls on 14th February that only happens once in 19 years. SAC wanted to take this opportunity to educate students on the tradition of this festival as well as creating fun and joy for the students.
